Bill Hart Award 2014

Stamp Active Network has great pleasure in announcing that this year’s nomination for the Bill Hart Award is Tim and Maureen Cory. The Bill Hart Award is given each year to recognise outstanding contributions by adults to the field of Youth Philately.

This year’s nominations, Tim and Maureen Cory returned to stamp collecting when their daughters joined the Kettering Junior Stamp Club organised by Anne Dummer. Both girls also joined Kidstamps, the children’s postal stamp club which Anne had started under the auspices of the then National Youth Stamp Group, and from which they both got great pleasure. With Anne’s untimely death they realised that there was no-one there to take over Kidstamps, and they decided to take it on so that other children were not deprived of the wonderful experience of stamp collecting that their daughters had gained.

That was 7 years ago when Kidstamps had just 89 members. Now 7 years later a total of 1,795 children have been through the Kidstamp experience, thanks to Tim and Maureen. There have been varying levels of participation, some children more enthusiastic than others. The scheme works on the basis of sending out vouchers which the children return in exchange for more stamps, FDCs, and other items, and Tim and Maureen are now sending out well over 1000 vouchers a year. A small number of the original members are still young enough to participate.

With all this voluntary work, Tim remains an avid collector of American stamps, and Maureen tends to chop and change with her current interests being any Blackpool related items as well as the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Without people with their level of dedication, the Stamp Active Network and Youth Philately in general would be a lot poorer and a lot less effective, and this award is just a small token of our appreciation for all that they have achieved.

It is anticipated that the actual presentation of the award will be made at Autumn Stampex.
